Schalke’s false start in the analysis Somehow not cool at all

Domenico Tedesco said a “thrilling situation” about the false start of his FC Schalke 04. The coach went even further: It was “somehow also horny” to work towards a sense of achievement after two defeats in a row. Then followed in Mönchengladbach the third season’s bankruptcy.

Meanwhile Tedesco sounds different. “Three defeats cannot be horny. Zero points from three games: The second player of last season is currently second last. The draw against Porto in the Champions League during the week also hardly brightened the mood”.

The reasons for the downturn are manifold. Last season’s third best defensive has forgotten how to defend itself. Last year’s average offensive at best could not compensate for the drop in defence performance. Not much fits together, which is also due to the fact that the entrances are still foreign to Tedesco’s system.

Already three goals according to standards

Proof of the defensive weakness: Schalke conceded his third goal after a standard situation at the 1:2 bankruptcy in Gladbach. In the entire last season there were only eight goals against after resting balls.

This weakness indicates the main problem of the Schalker: In the past season Schalke convinced as defensive bulwark. The players mastered the processes within the defensive 5-3-2 system perfectly. Schalke held the zero in the back as far as possible and used the few own chances efficiently in the front. In numbers: The team allowed the fourth fewest shots on goal in the league, but only shot the eleventh most often on goal. An impressive balance – but it’s exactly this balance that has now been overturned.

One possible reason: The team is not well-rehearsed. Against Gladbach there were four entrants in the starting eleven. They have obviously not yet internalized the defensive mechanisms of the Schalker system. The SPIX value underlines this: Sebastian Rudy, who came from Munich just two weeks ago, achieved a weak score of just 24.4 on the third matchday in the “ball conquest” category, and his partner Nabil Bentaleb achieved a score of 29.9. The midfield centre, which could hardly be surmounted last season, is too easy to crack. Gladbach’s Jonas Hofmann, who played Schalke dizzyingly, took advantage of this.

The six goals scored against Schalke in three games focus again on the Schalker offensive: Whoever is lagging behind must take control of the game. The opponent can retreat further and lurk for counterattacks. The problem is that the game’s structure was not the strength of the Schalkers last season. They scored almost half of their goals according to standards or by penalty.

This season, the game structure has hardly improved at all. Schalke is still too often looking for the direct way to the top from the defence. The midfield, the heart of modern football, plays over Schalke with long balls. The strikers can only rarely handle the inaccurate passes of the defenders.

It is noticeable that both the Schalk defenders and the attackers achieve only weak SPIX values. The defenders weaken in the area of game construction. This means that the attackers receive too few passes, which in turn has a negative effect on their SPIX. Guido Burgstaller is an example of this. Against Gladbach he reached an SPIX of 23, in the 1:2 defeat against Wolfsburg his SPIX was even at a catastrophic 1. The connection between defensive and offensive is the Schalker main problem. The hope for improvement personifies Rudy’s approach. The 26-fold national player is supposed to connect the team parts in midfield. He is still alienating with this role. His debut at 0:2 against Hertha was a disappointment (SPIX: 6). Against Gladbach he was especially present in the second half (Spix: 56). But that doesn’t help much if he lacks the points in the offensive midfield.

Breach of Taboos

For the first time in German football history, three points are deducted from a club for fan offence. The verdict is supposed to serve as a deterrent for Ultras – but could aggravate the conflict with them.

“Of course,” said Achim Späth. Of course, he was aware of the consequences of the verdict, which the presiding judge of the Federal Court of the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed in second instance on Tuesday. The experienced lawyer did not want to say any more after the pronouncement of the verdict and referred to the written statement he would write in the coming days.

In the confrontation with the active fan scene, the world’s largest football association is treading a new path: with a deduction of points as a result of spectator riots, it is intervening in the sporting competition for the first time.

Späth and his two assessors confirmed the deduction of three points against the regional league team SV Waldhof Mannheim for the current season, because the promotion game against KFC Uerdingen in the past season on 27 May had to be stopped after a massive use of pyrotechnics and flares by the Waldhof fans at the score of 1:2 in the 81st minute.

So far this consequence of the sanctioning of misconduct of the supporters was a taboo, fines and spectator (partial) exclusions were pronounced with similar offences. In riots following the relegations of Hamburger SV this year or TSV 1860 Munich in the previous season, the association refrained from punishing them with points deducted, now the next stage of (penalty) escalation followed.

Mannheim ruling now serves as precedent

“We are on new paths, but that’s what we want and we’re going that way now,” Späth said during the sentencing. “We have three different groups of fans,” he said, “fans, Ultras and criminals. It is important to keep these groups apart in order to prevent the takeover of those who “do not base themselves on the law”. The ruling following the abortion of the Mannheim match now serves as a precedent and is apparently supposed to have a deterrent effect.

The Mannheimers, who are currently leading the Southwest Regional League table despite the three-point deduction, think they have made themselves a buffer. “It feels a little bit like that”, said managing director Markus Kompp. After fan mistakes in the past the SV Waldhof has a bad state with the federation and provided beyond that for displeasure with the DFB, because it set itself in the past year as first and prominent club against the measure to the defense to let the Chinese U20 national team play out of competition in the regional league southwest.

“As a small SV Waldhof Mannheim, we are expected to follow this path for the first time. I don’t know whether this was the right choice,” Kompp said, showing no understanding for the verdict. He said it was difficult to try to solve a problem at SV Waldhof that existed throughout Germany.

It is fitting that the dialogue with representatives of the Ultra scene initiated by DFB President Reinhard Grindel was only cancelled by the fans a few weeks ago. At the same time, intensified protests were announced. “We are still motivated to the tips of our hair to stand up for the basic values of football and against a further alienation of football through corruption, landowners’ machinations and commercialisation”, it says in a joint statement by various fan scenes from professional clubs. Whether a tightening of the sanctions, as has now happened for the first time in the case of SV Waldhof, will deter fans from further action is at least questionable.

For the former Bundesliga club SV Waldhof, which has now been stuck in the fourth league for 15 years and, according to lawyer Dr. Johannes Zindel, has expressly kept the possibility open of taking action before a civil court against the verdict of the DFB Federal Court, the hope remains that the now pronounced deduction of points will not have a negative sporting effect. “It would probably be best for everyone if we had a twelve-point lead in May and climbed up,” explained Zindel. World Footballer's Choice grosvenor sports

He can’t stand going out empty

Luka Modric was elected world footballer – and the eternal winner Cristiano Ronaldo skipped the freestyle of the Croatian and former team mate. Many find this unsporting. Lionel Messi is also criticized.

For the first time in ten years, the winner of the FIFA World Cup is not Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. The new top star: Luka Modric. At the gala in London on Monday, the Croatian vice world champion was honoured as the new world footballer.

That is the sporting news. The excitement of the event: Ronaldo and Messi missed the award ceremony. Like Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Ronaldo was one of the three nominees, and Messi was to travel to London at the invitation of the World Football Association. But neither of them came.

Fabio Capello found clear words. “This is disrespectful towards the other players, FIFA and the entire football world,” said the then coach (including Real Madrid) on Spanish TV “TVE”: “Maybe Messi and Ronaldo have won too much and don’t like losing, but to be really good you have to show the same behaviour when you win and when you lose. Croatia’s striker legend Davor Suker said: “If you lose, you have to show the same attitude. The superstars also came under fire in the social networks.

Even before the Fifa freestyle, both Messi (family reasons) and Ronaldo had cancelled their participation. Due to the full schedule it was “impossible” for Juventus to take part in the gala, the Italian top club had announced and thus excused the Portuguese. Juventus was only in action on Sunday evening and will meet Bologna in Serie A on Wednesday. Whether Ronaldo already knew about Modric’s victory in the run-up to the tournament is not officially known.

Recent history shows, however, that the winner of the FIFA election has always been there, at least since 2009. Only the Dutch footballer Lieke Martens, who was nominated for the FIFA Election 2017, missed her award. She then thanked her for the title in a pre-recorded video message. The example suggests that the players will be informed of their victory in advance.

The international press is also reacting violently to Ronaldo’s absence. “He didn’t come because he couldn’t bear to go empty-handed,” the Croatian newspaper “24 sata” says. The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” writes: “Cristiano perhaps knew it this time too, or it was just intuition: he didn’t come to London because he can’t stand the idea of being just wallpaper for others.”

Hard accusations – which are not completely true. Since 2007, Ronaldo has been one of the world’s top footballers in eleven out of twelve FIFA elections. He won the award five times, went away empty-handed six times and only at the awards ceremonies in 2011 (winner: Lionel Messi) and this year Ronaldo stayed away from the event. Lionel Messi also failed to make it to the World Footballer’s Choice in 2016, despite his nomination. At that time Ronaldo won ahead of the Argentinian. Grosvenor Sports is offering the viewer a large selection of betting options across lots of different sports.

One reason for the harsh criticism of Ronaldo could be the recent Uefa election for Europe’s Footballer of the Year in August. Modric already prevailed over Ronaldo there. The Portuguese also apologised at this event.
