Learning Irish -

cogar - ireland's provinces
The following list indicates a range of learning options suitable for those new to the Irish language. The information here has been grouped according to the province in which these activities take place.

Historically, Ireland has been divided into four provinces : Connaught - Connacht, Leinster - Laighean, Munster - Mumhan and Ulster - Uladh. Connaught is located in the west of Ireland, Leinster in the east, Munster in the south and Ulster in the north. These geographical divisions also correspond to the principle dialect varieties of the Irish language. While the dialects do differ from each other, these differences are not so great as to seriously impair mutual understanding. As a new learner you may wish to choose a dialect on which to focus - however be aware that at this early stage noticeable distinctions between the dialects will be quite small and focus mainly on differences in pronunciation.

Note - while the courses here have been grouped into the provinces in which the activities take place, this does not necessarily mean that the dialect particular to that region is being taught. Confirmation of dialects should be obtained from the company itself prior to booking.
