Music, Song & Dance -
Music Sessions

cogar - ireland's provinces
The range of musical entertainment available in Ireland is endless - there is something available for every mood and taste. Below, we have provided information on various musical evenings - more commonly called seisiúin or sessions. These have been grouped according to the province in which they take place, and have then been further split into the categories of singing & music sessions, and céilíthe and shows. Historically, Ireland has been divided into the four provinces of Connaught - Connacht, Leinster - Laighean, Munster - Mumhan and Ulster - Uladh. Connaught is located in the west of Ireland, Leinster in the east, Munster in the south and Ulster in the north.

Singing and music sessions can be found anywhere in Ireland at any time of the year. We have attempted to compile a list of the most authentic options, avoiding those staged simply for the benefit of tourists. The singing sessions are a mixture of traditional singing, including elements of sean-nós. Visitors are welcome to come along to listen, and to crank out a few notes if the mood seizes them. Similarly, if you have an instrument, most sessions won't object to people joining in.

Céilithe and shows are slightly more formal occasions. A céilí is a night of traditional Irish dancing for groups of two people upwards, depending on the dance. Most of the céilíthe will demonstrate the steps to visitors before starting. They are fairly easy to pick up, and you can always just watch what everyone else is doing. The idea is not so much to get it all right as to have a laugh - so kick up and enjoy the night ! The shows are theatrical presentations with lots of music, song and dance for your pleasure.
